FYRN UR PROZEKEWTERS!

sometimes i'm just compelled to write like that.
sorry.

looks like rove might have had his sticky fingers all up in the land of lincoln's cornhole.
As a federal probe into Gov. Blagojevich's administration heated up in late 2004, there were discussions between GOP powerbroker Robert Kjellander and Bush White House insider Karl Rove to oust corruption-busting U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald from his job, according to a man whom prosecutors want to testify at Tony Rezko’s trial.
this is only interesting if you follow illinois state politics.
which, i'm pretty sure, most illinoisians don't even do.

I'm the microphone master, money makin' man...

... And I got more rock than Bon Jovi's band

just throwing another installment of 80s hip hop at ya.
currently listening to "Ugly People Be Quiet" as performed by Cash Money & Marvelous.
this tune is another jam. starts out with the opening piano line from Tears for Fear's "Head Over Heels" (though other websites claim it's a sample from Tears for Fear's "Shout" ... wrong Shout ...). from what i've gathered CM & M were a later day DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (both groups hailing from Philly) just more underground/less commercial. DJ Cash Money holds it down with some really sharp cuts (he loves the slick rick samples to scratch on), but Marvelous isn't the hottest MC on the block ... not terrible by any means and better then most today, just not poppin' off like i'd like to hear. the copy i have of this track is off a compilation entitled "The Rap Pack II" , (the original is from CM & M's album "Where's the Party At?") a 1988 release on Fresh Records. --- On a side note, Fresh Records parent label Sleeping Bag Records put out more then hip hop and electro. i have an album on sleeping bag entitled "Reggae Dancehall Vol. 2". it's mostly digital riddims with 80s rub a dubbers on em (yellowman, tiger, admiral bailey, etc) but some of the cuts are real dope. oddly discogs.com has no mention of either vol. 1 or 2. hmmmmmmmmm ...

Oh, Benny

Benny the Bull will bust you up!

He'll bust you up even if you're a cop!

His related blotter list includes reefer possession, shooting a t-shirt gun at the Celtics, and even appeared on Jerry Springer!

aahhh scooby doo whacha wanna do crew ?

beat bop as performed by Rammelzee and K-Rob (though the official performer credit is "Rammelzee Vs K-Rob") ... this is seriously the jam ... aside from the fact that Basquiat designed the cover and did production (the 12" single goes for around 70 bux because of this) this is a really hep track ... clocking in at over 10 minutes this is definitely not for the casual listener, but the vocal effects and strange violin "bridge" make the time fly by ... the beat makes me think of something Madlib would have done if had been producing in the 80s ... this is one of a handful of songs regularly pulled up on my itunes from a compilation i picked up (digitally, i'd kill for the original vinyl) simply entitled "Rap 1" (i also have "Rap 2") ... "Rap 1" is a Profile Records compilation of NYC hip-hop from the early 80s ... Profile is responsible for a core of classic NYC hip hop ... according to discogs.com ...
One of the earliest hip-hop labels. Founded in New York in 1981 by Steve Plotnicki and Cory Robbins. Robbins left the label in 1995 and founded Robbins Entertainment. Plotnicki remained with the label unti he decided to sell it in 1997. After a fierce bidding war between Tommy Boy Music and BMG's Arista Records, the latter won, and what was in print at the time was reissued with new BMG catalog numbers. Some new product was released since then, but it was eventually shut down by its new parent and its artists became Arista artists but were eventually dropped by the label anyway. The entire catalog, save for Run-D.M.C., is now out-of-print. The offices that it occupied are now those of Koch Records. First release was by Grace Kennedy #nr PRO-7001.
artists on this compliation that didn't make the Arista cut ... 3 Fresh MCs, Disco Four, Pumpkin (video), and Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde (get ya skates on)

in other music "news", had reason to be in Evanston this past weekend so took the opportunity to hit Second Hand Tunes used record shop. i really like that place, i always find decent stuff for good prices. i got some early roy ayers and tom waits, but struck a nice find in "Thomas Mapfumo - The Chimurenga Singles 1976-1980" on the original Meadowlark label. here's some info on the man, and some more. stuff is really amazing. the album features an apology at the bottom of back cover for "... the recording quality being less then desirable. however, keep in mind some of these songs were recorded under war conditions." i like african music but have a hard time getting into as most of what's given to me by friends is the current form of afropop. that is to say dx-7 keyboards, drum machines, and midi, MIDI, MIDI! it's really hard for me to take that stuff seriously. this album features 2 different live bands "The Blacks Unlimited" and "The Acid Band" playing an excellent variety of polyrhythmic beats behind Mapfumo's combination of melancholy and ecstatic talk/singing. the back cover also features translations of what Mapfumo is saying over the tracks.

oh yeah, and "record store day" ... not really sure what it was as i was in record stores on friday and sunday, but not the actual day (saturday, 4.19) ... i did score a free LP on sunday in madison in conjunction with "record store day"... Columbia Records was apparently giving out free LP samplers with the purchase of any album on Columbia ... i think this store was just trying to get rid of em so i snatched one ... anyway, it can now be proudly stated... i own an LP containing both John Mayer's "Waiting on the World to Change" and RUN-DMC's "It's Tricky" ... awesome ?

and the non-sequitur ...

this is an awesome picture for so many reasons.

oh, and happy 420 i guess ... not really into the "holiday" ... did catch a lil of half baked on cable though ... "SAMPSON SIMPSON, I STICK BAH MAH STOREE ... I'M FRUM JAMAICA" ... good stuff ...

idiocy!

Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself “as often as possible” while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

Also, are you kidding me? This won't happen come November. Barack Obama is too eloquent to use the word "awesome" and John McCain thinks of it as a word his grandkids generation invented.

keffiyeh

i know i'm not the first to be snarky about this, BUT ...

this is a keffiyeh (here being worn my arafat)

it is a "symbol of Palestinian nationalism"

NOT
A FASHION ACCESSORY
YOU WICKER PARK
HIPSTER FUCKS!!!!!!!!

idiots.
*note: asian girlfriend shown in picture, keffiyeh not shown in illustration

and i know i shouldn't be presumptuous, but it's clear what the "rationale" is. "i'm wearing this to show my solidarity with the palestinian cause." it is probably a safe bet that the extent of knowledge, for most of these douches, on the palestinian cause is that "uh, yeah, well, they used to live in israel and now they don't and the israelis are like, really mean to them." i exaggerate. but it still begs the question "what have you actually DONE!?" ... ie: have you attended public discussions/lectures on the conflict? supported resolution funds? read the history to understand the roots of palestinian displacement ? at least spoken up when hearing uninformed or hateful comments ? i am no saint when it comes to the whole "practice what you preach". i am a staunch supporter for the removal of our current occupation in iraq. however, i have not done much to make any real difference except spout off whenever opportunities arose (living in chicago, it's hard to find a war supporter), and used my "power" of vote to attempt to make a difference. my point is that simply wearing something does not immediately dictate a sympathetic stance with a cause. now obviously i am making a blanket statement, but it is rather disturbing when i see revolution turned into fashion, because fashion (in most "developed" countries) by definition is vain, and one of the ways in which "vain" is defined ... "without real significance, value, or importance; baseless or worthless". not to mention that is once again turning a revolutionary image into capitalist gain. urban outfitters carried keffiyehs for a while in 2006 but pulled them after controversy and concern that they "supported sympathy for terrorists". here's a story about that.

you know the media is portraying a biased image if a traditional cloth worn for hundreds (thousands?) of years by the same people that (arguably) jesus christ drew lineage from is only equated with terrorists.

They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'"

On a related note, there's a fine new company out: Hip Kid Clothing featuring fashions by Pimpfants! That's right, urban clothing for your baby. Cause really, what 6 month old is complete without its (his? her?) velour track suit or Lil Beaters T-Shirt proclaiming his mom is a M.I.L.F. (Do you think they know what MILF means? Do you really want your baby wearing a shirt that says he'd like to fuck his own mom?)

All he wants is candy

HYPNO-KING!!

loooooooook into my eyes ... you are getting sleepy ... when i snap my fingers 3 times you will ... HAVE A DREAM!

boozin on a thursday nite

i know there are a plethora of sites out there that help you make a cocktail from random ingredients that most regular drinkers have around the house. input 3 or more different boozes/mixers/garnishes and it spits out a drink possibility. personally, i've never been happy with the results ... maybe i've only had incompatible mixing agents, but i would rather assume that those websites are just not very good. that being said, i was itching for a drink tonite after finishing a bottle of wine and so took a chance .. so without further ado ... if yer in a pinch, and you happen to have these items available, here is an excellent cocktail....
  • 3 ice cubes
  • 4 parts brewed iced tea (unsweetened)
  • 3 parts rum (flavored rum works well too, i used raspberry rum as it was all that was available)
  • 1 part triple sec
  • 1 sprig of fresh mint
  • serve in an old-fashioned glass
it's a little sweeter then i usually prefer in a drink, but then beggars can't be choosers.
i think with a lil' more triple sec and maybe a less sweet rum this could be a really amazing drink. the triple sec helps to bring out the "leafy" taste of the iced tea which is the flavor i prefer when sipping on tea.

so, in honor of today, it shall be called The Landmine.

former ceo of a biotch company

seems mostly to consist of typos, but there's some funny stuff in there.
this could be a cool site in a year or so... once they have more content.

not hired

one of my favorites...
and from their myspace page ...
also, notice that it's not even a scan of the image, he or she took a picture of it ...
brilliant.

on a side note, i found a stack of records in the trash on my way to work today ...
lotta dollar bin finds, but highlights include ...
  • nazareth - hair of the dog (yesssssssss)
  • cyndi lauper - she's so unusual
  • tom petty - damn the torpedoes (don't wanna live like a reffffuugeeeee)
  • hall and oates - h20 (maneater!)
  • a very psyched-out looking record called "silhouette segments" ... looks like a christian record of interviews with pop stars. track titles include "hippie version of the 23rd psalm" and "hippie version of creation" i cant figure out if its interviews or music ... the gate-fold has all kinds of photos featuring pastor john rydgren with pop stars of the 60s ... peaches and herbs, the association, the monkees, 4 tops, etc ... ah, someone else already wrote about it ...
  • black flag - my war (original 1983 release with rollins on vocals, prolly worth something to somebody)
  • lost in the stars ... this is another weird one, from 1985 on the A&M label, its the music of Kurt Weill as being performed by a staggering list of artists including sting, john zorn, lou reed and tom waits ... whaaaa ? i didn't know who kurt weill was so i looked it up ... he wrote "mac the knife" (from threepenny opera) as well as "september song" and co-wrote music to a bunch of other musicals in the early 20th century.

the godkiller

apologies.
i'm usually not into this kind of stuff, but this video takes some turns i did not see coming.
plus the guys look at the start of the video reminded me of ex-drastics guitar player elliot. so i had to watch.

World Autism Awareness Day

...does awkward collar pull for Pimpernel

Drunk Driving Isn't Funny

But this article is pretty funny. Especially the "Click-2-Listen" option. Nothing like hearing a female robot saying "I ain't letting that ho take my car."

Autism Awareness is Important

but damn, CNN, you gotta cool your jets. Top 3 stories (1 - 2 - 3) (at 11:30 today) all on autism? Isn't there other important stuff going on today? Or any other day? I mean, yeah, your Health page is littered with autism related articles which is fine. Autism is a hot topic in Health-related news. But do you know what else is important? Shit that you buried like we might be going into a recession or the release of the torture memo or even some good news like we might be getting some military help in Afghanistan. I shouldn't blame it all on CNN's fixation with autism. Other stories that trumped that follow the lines of The Banshee Whore out sells the King and there's a really big dog. Serious, that's all there really is to the story. The dog is really big. You know, like really, really, really big. But, still, it's not like it ate a horse.

So where was I . . . . oh yeah, autism and CNN.

If you go to CNN's Health Page, nestled 'twixt two blog entries by the good Doctor Gupta addressing (you guessed it) autism, there's an article on McCain's health. Is McCain autistic? Gupta's inconclusive on that, but from my nonmedical opinion I think it would explain a lot. Check out the symptoms. Repeating phrases, odd play, acting as if deaf, not wanting to cuddle, throwing excessive tantrums, having no fear of dangerous situations . . . . Still, not the point I was going to make. So Gupta decides that he can diagnose McCain's health based on 8 year old records and visual evidence. Kind of like Senator Frist, but McCain's not in a persistent vegetative state.

Here's an important line from Dr. Gupta's blog entry regarding McCain's health, particularly in response to McCain's cancer. Some doctors said that the scars on the left side of his face that were left from surgery to remove the cancer were much larger than would be needed for the type/severity of cancer that McCain has disclosed. "Other doctors disagree, saying McCain’s aggressive operation may have been done out of an abundance of caution, where doctors removed more lymph nodes and other tissue than is normally done, because he is, well, John McCain." In other words, if you're not John McCain, your doctor might not very well be all that cautious to remove all the cancer from your head. Cause you're not John McCain. Chump.

Now, for being such good readers I give you two gifts:

the Gupta Squad, coming to ABC this Fall!

Apparently there's (another?) Sanjay Gupta who's a director and this is an actress from his film, "Koena Mitra wear[ing] an arabic styled dress consisting of loose coins."

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL RECORD STORE!!!!!!!!!!

while i love chicago and good reps of it, i can't take kanye anymore.
seriously, everytime i see him make one of the two expressions he can make (pissed) and (precocious) i wanna smack whatever pair of stunna shades he has on off his lop sided head. and on top of that, every record i've heard of his has successively more and more samples that are instantaneously recognizable. DIG DEEPER KID!!! its easy to make a "hit" with a sample from MJ's PYT cause MJ's PYT IS THE MUFFUGGIN JAM!!!

anyway, here's a really cool video ... off erykah's new album ... helps if you're into records ... plus i think madlib did some production on it ... not on this track though ...
