To make matters worse, the british pound sign is easily confused with the pound sign(#). Think if someone tells you to push the pound sign, you wouldn't know which one!
And I read that the C64 was battling it out with another computer for best selling computer in Britain during the 1980's. So, it might've been a move to toss the Brits a bone.
